Struggling with life uncertainty

We can’t plan life precisely.
Because no matter how perfect our plan is,
life has a way to rearrange it.
However,
If you could see a movie of your life before you lived it,
would you want to live it?

Well, I’ve been involved on several Engineering Project on the company I’m working now. Just like any other Oil & Gas project that I’ve experienced, there is similar pattern that I know very well which always happen. It’s called the uncertainty moments, where I didn’t know what, when, and how the best solution of Engineering Design shall be applied for the specific problems or issues on the project.

I know, it’s the uncertainty that life is all about. But, to be honest, you see, I confess that I normally hate to be caught on the bad feeling in those uncertainty time. The most difficult part of uncertainty, at least for me, is the inability to plan and feel in control, until I know all the answer.
But maybe, it isn’t the uncertainty that bothers me, it’s my tendency to get lost in my feelings and thought about it. The feeling where I’ve made speculation and speculation, that leads me to start indulging fear, then I get lost in a cycle of reactionary thoughts.

But, It comes to my mind occasionally, “If I could see a movie of my life before I lived it, would I want to live it?” As for now, my direct answer will be definitely not. The thrill of living is that, I don’t know what’s coming. In other words, uncertainty is what makes my life fun. My sense is that, that uncertainty rescues me from boredom.

It’s like this, “If you could see each future step along the way, you’d never get the chance to be amazed at what you can do”, doesn’t it?

Islamic Book Fair 2013

Last night was the closing ceremony of Islamic Book Fair 2013, the most prestigious book exhibition in Jakarta I thought, if we cannot say in Indonesia or even in South East Asian. The book fair was so popular that many large buses came from all over the surrounding areas of Jakarta, from the very first opening day until the last day, bringing so many people, both old and young, including primary schools students and tiny kindergarten kids. What a fantastic view! This was one of the differences between Islamic Book Fair and the other book exhibitions held in Jakarta.

Another Islamic Book Fair’s greatness was the visiting of foreign publishing houses` representatives. I remember in the opening day I saw a bunch of foreigners. They were sightseeing between a publishing house’s stand to another, speaking a strange language which I presumed Turkish and dragging some luggage. On the last day I visited the book fair, I saw a couple of men looked like Indians, one of them was very tall, still dragging big luggage, which later I found out that they were Malaysians.

I also remember when eleven Malay people from one of Malaysian book publishers came and visited our publishing house in the third or fourth day of the Islamic Book Fair. They came intentionally to our headquarter after their visit to our stand during the book fair. They seemed curious of what makes Indonesian world of books so lively and high-graded, especially after they had seen the Islamic books phenomenon here with their very own eyes.

Not only adults like me, small children and young students showed the same enthusiasm in searching and buying books through this wonderful exhibition. I still clearly remember how a pack of primary students crowded a publishing house’s stand and bought many Arabic books, of course with their giggles and cheerful chats. Can you imagine what did it like to be among them in a long queue? Nevertheless,  I was happy to see their passion in books, but I wondered if they could even read them.

In my first visit during the opening ceremony, I bought "The Choice" witten by Ahmad Deedat (the original English version) at IDR 62,000. Very very very cheap for such a valuable book. It was truly a bargain.

This 12^th Islamic Book Fair was definitely crowded with people. Especially in the last three days of exhibition. It was really a tiring journey through the ocean of book lovers, but it was indeed worth doing. However, I hope they hold the book fair better next year, especially in managing the praying and ablution areas.

 

 

The Right Person Is..??

 

 If true love is so important to everyone,
then why is that we have so many issues on finding it?
I know, we fear rejection, want attention,
crave affection, and dream of perfection..
But in the end, Life is what happens,
when you’re so busy making other plans…

True love is not easy, they’re hard work. It’s about compromise, growing together, etc, etc. But if it’s the right person, then it’s easy. Looking at that girl and knowing she’s all you really want out of life, that should be the easiest thing in the world, right?

I know the odds are, the love of my life isn’t gonna magically walk through that door. I’m the only one with the power to change my life. I’m the only one who can attract a woman to me. I cannot stand by idly waiting for a woman to come along and sweep me off my feet. It’s not her job to do so.

But, how do we know about “the right person”? Because, as far as I concerned, It’s not always easy to see someone’s true colors. Sometimes, we must look beneath the feminine spell to find that fragile ego. Ignore the sparkle of the jewel, bring the truth out of the shadows, to see the real beauty of her smile..

Besides that, true love doesn’t happen right away, it’s an ever-growing process. It’s like Engineering, It has phase for “developing”. There is Issued for Internal Review, Issued for Approval, Issued for Design, and Issued for Construction..

The Real Truths..

You see, we shouldn’t have to fight for a spot in someone’s life. If someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you. On the other hand, if someone wants to be a part of your life, they’ll also make an effort to be in it. It’s just stupid to insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth, because if they know your worth, they will create a space for you.

But, somehow, I don’t know what a privilege it is to grow old with someone, who doesn’t drive me “insane”, or doesn’t humiliate me beyond repair. But, the thing is, it’s about two people being true to each other, even when they are separated in distance. I mean, remaining faithful is never an option, but a priority. Loyalty is everything.

Wow, this is my new post finally. I am still amazed at how far my personal page have been developed, which began with such humble expectations. To be honest, I’m writing here during my spare  alone time. Looking at back about posts that I’ve written, the more I realized how much my self has changed.

Usually, the tradition is “list 100 things about you”, but I have different opinion. I just want to write the quotes from my favorite Serial TV, where I grow up around them since three years ago. Those quotes are so related to me, and little bit also describe “things about me”. And, this quote from “How I Met Your Mother”, marks my 100th post. The Elite Group

I wrote this as reflection of our memories together. Memories of friendship, happiness, and silliness as well. I just want to express how happy I am to be your friend in our lovely group.

There’s something I realized during this time with you, Guys. The conversation is more fun when we find someone who has the same desire to learn english. We have a partner who we share enjoyable things with and also makes us feel comfortable even when we make mistakes. It isn’t like you have an opponent who is stuck in a race with you for being greedy to come first, It’s more like you have partners who accompany you, struggling together with a lot of laughter, happiness, and also understanding.

These memories start with my university senior , Tresnadi Prabowo, our group conversation teacher. He was graduated from ITB, He took Mechanical Engineering as his major. He is our Leader in our group. The first time I met him when I joined with RECC english Club. In my eyes, he isn’t just a good friend who tries to teach us the way we must speak English correctly.he became truly teacher that always tries to make us understand how English works more than I can express. Indeed because He got 7 IELTS Score! haha..I love the way he teaches us in the English Ritual Meeting. Thank you Tres, for making us really love learning English, especially for me in our english ritual. And most important of all, thank you for making us understand how it works. Even though I barely know it yet now, I hope it is a good beginning for the future. Now he pursues his dream to continue his study. He want to take his master degree in overseas.

Yuddy, Our Big boss and also our mascot because he has the funniest facial expressions and also comments which make us laugh for no reason ("you know what my life is so damn mess!" :P). Yuddy is often teased by us because of this. I can’t stop laughing when I remember the moment when yuddy was singing the US national anthem.hahahaha. We know that he has strong passion to become "american citizen". Yuddy is our first initiator to build this group. He is the one who started our weird english conversation. He studied at Widyatama University. Yuddy used to walk together with bonny. Wherever you find bonny you can find yuddy as well. Same like bonny, He studied at Widyatama University. 

Gunawan aka "Edward Cullen" is the coolest man in our group. He was a graduate student from mechanical Engineering. He graduated from ITB university. He is the one who started to make some jokes about anything particularly about love expression. Even though he does’t talk english too much, He can give us important words when He is speaking. But sometimes, He says unnecessary things that make us laugh. After that, we always call him Edward Cullen because his appearance is very cool brohh haha..Lately we are so sad when we heard that he will work in Singapore. But I hope that he will find his dreams in his work office. 

Then my memories float to nada, The first and only girl in our group. She hasn't graduated yet from Unisba, she is majoring in physicology. She is kind and also "Galau" however She is very active woman in all English Club activities. She used to involve actively in English Club Event (RECC and The Leds). Nada is more like “Reminder” for us. She usually arranges our occasion get togethers. When she calls us, It usually works, but sometimes it doesn’t. We spend time with just chatting sometimes.

Bonny is the one who always give strong attention to his footbal club (Valencia FC). Now He is studying in Widyatama University. I hope she will be a good Banker someday. In our Group I honestly think that he is the one who has good english speaking. He ever joined marketing debate competition, he participated it together with yuddy.

Doso (Encep Amir). he is now studying in Padjajaran University. He is taking environtmental studies program in his collage. he loves japanese/korean culture so much then that's why he involved in the Cosplay community. Now he is trying to get an oppotunity as dual degree scholarship grantee in Twente university.

There are some of my memories of our time together. I can’t expound all of them, I’ve just written a few here. Even so, there so many good times we had in our conversation time. Even though we come from different campus and have so many different backgrounds, we complete each other. From now on, I want to improve my English even more, so I can see the world and make other friendships like ours. This is the most enjoyable English conversation group I have ever had in my life. Thank you friends, for our precious time together.

Enjoy Every Single Step In Your Journey

Have you ever had one of those days,
where nothing at all that monumental happens,
but by the end of it,
You have no idea of who you are anymore,
or what the hell you’re doing with your life?

I think, in career terms, that’s what happened for me right now. I know, as I grown-up, there is always a new areas of experience, where I have no guidelines, handle things badly, overreact, & get it wrong. And again, I have to face it & just deal with it. You see, when you reach at some stages of age on life, you might be surprised to discover you still don’t have life quite figured out. Especially, when your best plans are not working as you liked. Then, it’s leaning to a self-doubt, future-worried, and fear. All negativity starting to flash on mind, & self-confidence slightly fade away. Because, honestly, When everything in our life is right on track, it’s easy to believe that things happen for a reason, it’s easy to have faith, and also easy to give an advice or motivate others. But when things start to go wrong, then it’s very hard to hold on to that faith. It’s hard not to wonder what reasons these things happen for. At the first place, the whole story looks so predictable. Study hard, go to college, graduate, then find a secure job, planning pension, meet a woman, and built a family. But in reality, even to get all of those predictable story arc, are not as simple as it sounds.

The real problem starts now, near around my mid-20′s, when I get thrown out into the world to do “whatever I want to” and realize that actually, the majority of the time is just been spent for surviving and helping others to survive. Kind of a bummer, especially when I spend the majority of my early 20′s of days looking forward to the freedom of being an adult to chase all my goals. This realization is enough to cripple me. I know, the career path that I’ve chosen since a year ago will make me to deal a lot with uncertainty. Back to that time, I believed I can handle the challenge, and just being happy & excited to take it step by step. But, what I didn’t know is that dealing with uncertainty itself  is very stressful, especially when I experienced with my own-head to miss the best opportunity. And, I just can’t help myself to clear some air from all these future-worried.  

Yeah, surely, now is the kind of time in my life at “the down” phase,

and, maybe this is exactly the times to behave & learn a lot as an adult..
To measure myself at least once with nothing to help me,
except my hands and my own head..
Well, for now, all I can think about, is to take “a leap of faith” route..

Financial Freedom = Happiness

Most people said, money isn’t important, or money does not buy happiness. How many times have you heard this? Lots of times, I am willing to bet!!! Many will argue that money is an object that, while making life a little easier, doesn’t or can’t buy happiness. My view is slightly different, and I think I’ve had enough “education” in this regard. I mean, I do subscribe to the notion that money isn’t everything, but I also believe that it is a major, critical facet of life today. If we can take the need for money out of our life’s equation then we will be free to live life as it’s meant to be lived. But as long as it remains a means for survival, nobody can tell me money isn’t important or doesn’t create an immense amount of unhappiness and stress.

I mean, after pass the college and living in reality for few months, met a lot of people that having different socio-economic life, I realize that it’s not about “the money itself”, but the most important thing is the saving, or a sufficient continuous income. Because, our savings, believe it or not, affect the way we stand, the way we walk, and our self-confidence. What I understand, the harsh truth is that, a man without savings is always running. He must take the first job offered. He sits nervously on life’s chairs because any small emergency throws him into the hands of others. Without savings, a man is often fearful of the present and the future. Being in a constant state of fear is a horrible way to live, right?

A man with savings can walk tall. He may appraise opportunities in a relaxed way, have time for judicious estimates and intelligent decisions. He need not be rushed by life’s problems or economic necessity. Then, for sure the question is how much money do we really need? The answers to these questions depends on our lifestyle and what our material needs are. So, as the saying goes, the main goals are not the money, but to gain a financial freedom. Please note, It isn’t the same as being rich. Although people often confuse the two, they are completely separate goals.

So, how do you build it? Based on my experienced, the best way to achieve our financial goals is to have stable income, that comes from a good career, whether as employee or entrepeneur. And, our decision about what career path to take, should not be solely driven by money, however. Ideally, our career should involve work we find interesting and which we can identify with. Working just for a paycheck is to “have a job”, not a career..Well, the answer is slightly different for everyone, maybe. But it’s an answer we should be seeking. For me, it’s just simple, financial freedom mean as not needing to worry about money. In simple words, financial freedom = Happiness..

Life for better future

I’m 22 years old, and suddenly, life is not so cool anymore. There’s some part of me that cringe as I approach this age. This milestone tend to get me thinking a lot & heavy, where I have to analyze every aspect, and surely on real-based. I know, who we are today is reflection about what we’ve done in the past, and who we are in the future is based on what we’ve done & decided today, right?

As I grow older, there are a lot of good moments happened in life, and they make life worth living. But the problem is, moments pass, and lurking around the corner from those moments is a cruel, named reality. I know it may sound stupid, but I didn’t always feel so great about myself growing up. But, It’s time to let go of the fantasies, It’s time to living in reality.

Where is it going? Who I’m gonna be in 10-15 years more? Where is place that I have to settle? What should I have done differently? Am I really happy with my life? Etc, and etc.. Then I start thinking about all the things in life that I haven’t done yet too.

Maybe this doesn’t happen to everyone, but it certainly happened to me. Because honestly, I really don’t want to just living life as if I had no choices, just like ” let the chips fall where they may”. But the problem is, some “fantasy” involved. As I reach 22, I really have to “delete” the fantasy part. Truth is, it’s quite scary.

Offshore Platform Structure

One month ago my lecturer gave me some material about offshore platform. now i am trying to give explanation about these material. Offshore platform has been used in oil and gas industry as early as 1930 in Venezuela. The first offshore platform was made by wood material. The steel type platform was then used in 1947 in a 6 m depth of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Since that period, various types of offshore platform has been developed and used as main offshore facility in oil and gas industry. Offshore platform can be used in many ways. A full offshore oil and gas facility can have many platforms such as quarters platform, wellhead platform, process platform, compressor platform, etc.
Type of structure and the support configuration of offshore platform are in consideration with depth and difficulties in erecting the platform. Therefore, there are many types of offshore platform. Based on the type of structure, offshore platform can be divided as :

• Concrete gravity platform
• Fixed steel platform
• Semi submersible platform
• Tension leg platform
• Guyed tower platform

1, 2) conventional fixed platforms; 3) compliant tower; 4, 5) vertically moored tension leg and mini-tension leg platform; 6) Spar ; 7,8) Semi-submersibles ; 9) Floating production, storage, and offloading facility; 10) sub-sea completion and tie-back to host facility.

In addition to that classification, depending on the number of legs & jacket type, fixed offshore platform can be divided into :

• Monopod platform
• Bipod platform
• Tripod platform
• 4, 6, or 8 pile platform

A common offshore platform is consisted of platform deck, jacket, and pile. Deck is the place where all production equipments are placed. Jacket is a tubular steel structure that serves as a lateral load support for the platform while pile serves as a vertical load support. For come cases, jacket is not used because the lateral load of platform is neglect able.
In a common Offshore platform, deck, jacket, and pile are fabricated onshore. The first stage of platform erection is transporting the jacket and putting it in the designated place. After the jacket is fixed in the right place, pile is driven via the jacket hollow tube to the sea bed. Finally, the deck part is placed and connected at the top of support structure.
For safety and ergonomic reasons, platform layout should be carefully designed. Platform north should be facing to deeper water. This north part is also used as the area for jack up drilling rig and foundations spud can or mat. The south side platform is used for boat berthing, pipeline riser and subsea pipeline. Layout of platform should also be designed by considering drilling sequence, prevailing wind, and other utility such as helipad.
Load acting on platform is vital in a platform’s design stage. In designing a platform, load can be divided to load at deck structure and load at jacket structure. In general, the working load in an offshore platform consisted of the following load.
Load at Deck structure:

• Topside load : Deck structure, piping, equipment, life load, crane load, helicopter load, drilling work over load.
• Lateral load : Wind and earthquake.

Load at Jacket structure:

• Vertical load : Deck structure and buoyancy
• Lateral load : Wind, wave, current, earthquake, and added hydrodynamic mass.

Some of applicable engineering standards for offshore platform design are:

• API RP2A Recommended Practice for Planning, Designing and Constructing Fixed Offshore Platforms
• AISC Specifications for Design, Fabrication and Erection of Structural Steel Buildings
• API Spec 2B, Fabricated Structural Pipes
• AWS D 1.1, section 8 and 10

Like how I used to help you while you were little, learning how to walk.

"Being in Competition...DARE U!"

The tittle of my article is really offensive manner. i am very sory to those who always living in comfort zone. i am personally hate with this word. yeah " Competition" the word which will distingush people into two kind, the looser and the winner.

Life is a a competition. I’ve heard many people complained about this statement. They argue that perceiving life as a competition would make life feel un-enjoyable and full with seriousness. Let me elaborate why I think life need to be a competition and will always be.

Firstly, whether we realizing it or not, competition will make us better. Being in a competition, someone will always try to improve his/her performance which in the end, whether (s)he win or not, will improve his overall capability. One of my professor explained why many overseas chinese and indians are more successful than their family in their home country. His answer is because these chinese and indians areexposed to a competitive world, either in US, europe, or anywhere else.

I do agree that our life need not to be a stressful life; however, I’m even more disagree if we think that this life is just to be enjoyed, whether not to pray to the God at all or doing the good thing in a slow pace. Having in mind that this is a competition, competition between us and ourselves and a competition between us and the time.

Lastly, in term of applicability, when I was a junior high school student, I think a round 10 years ago, even though I was studying in a countryside area, I always think that I have to improve my knowledge, because I want to be on the same level of competency with the students in Java (because java is the most developed region in Indonesia). When I was studying at the university, even though I was studying in the best university in Indonesia, I stress my mind that I have to be as smart and competent as the harvard student. believe me, all of this mind suggestion work.

Bearing in mind that we are competing in this life, it will makes us want to do more and to improve more. So, ready to be in the race? Good luck!

Kenapa Harus Struktur BAJA??

Baja telah mengganti kedudukan besi tempa sebagai bahan utama bangunan logam sejak abad ke- 19. Hingga tahun 1960-an, baja yang dipergunakan dalam konstruksi, menurut klasifikasi ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), tergolong sebagai baja karbon A7 dengan spesifikasi tegangan leleh minimum sebesar 33 ksi. Pada saat itu, baja struktur lainnya seperti baja paduan rendah yang khusus tahan korosi (A242) dan baja yang lebih siap di las (A373), memang sudah tersedia namun masih jarang digunakan pada bangunan.

Lain halnya dengan saat ini, sekarang telah tersedia baja dengan berbagai pilihan, sehingga bahan tersebut sudah mungkin digunakan dengan kekuatan lebih besar maupun pada tempat-tempat yang tegangannya sangat tinggi tanpa mamperbesar ukuran batangnya. Dewasa ini baja telah memiliki tegangan leleh dari 24000 sampai dengan 100000 psi (pounds per square inch) (165 - 690 MPa) dan telah tersedia untuk berbagai keperluan struktural.

Dalam dunia offshore, baja juga memiliki peranan penting karena baja saat ini merupakan material utama yang digunakan untuk membuat platform. Apalagi bagi tipe platform di Indonesia yang didominasi oleh tipe jacket platform. Pengetahuan yang cukup bagi seorang perencana mengenai bahan atau material ini akan sangat bermanfaat terutama untuk mengoptimalkan antara kekuatan struktur dengan biaya konstruksi maupun perawatan.

Baja memiliki sifat-sifat yang menguntungkan untuk dipakai sebagai bahan struktur yang mampu memikul beban statik maupun beban dinamik. Alasan lainnya sehingga baja banyak digunakan dalam perencanaan struktur anjungan lepas pantai adalah sebagai berikut :

1. Isotropi

Baja mempunyai kekuatan yang sama terhadap tarik maupun tekan. Hal ini akan sangat menguntungkan bila struktur mengalami beban siklis seperti beban gelombang.

2. Daktilitas

Baja mempunyai daktilitas yang besar sehingga struktur dapat mengalami deformasi yang besar tanpa penambahan beban. Hal ini dapat dijadikan sebagai tanda (warning) sebelum struktur sepenuhnya runtuh.

§ Dapat dibentuk sesuai keinginan

Baja dapat difabrikasi lebih mudah sesuai bentuk yang diinginkan, baik bentuk penampangnya maupun bentuk rangkanya.

3. Perbandingan antara kekuatan dan berat yang besar

Hal ini menguntungkan karena dapat menghasilkan desain yang efisien. Bangunan struktur baja mempunyai keunggulan dalam hal rasio cukup kecil antara berat sendiri dengan daya dukung beban yang dapat dipikulnya jika dibandingkan dengan bangunan struktur beton. Dari sisi lain hal ini juga memiliki kekurangan, yaitu struktur menjadi langsing, sehingga perilaku responsnya kurang menguntungkan ketika menerima beban-beban dinamik yang umumnya bekerja horisontal.

Baja-baja struktur diberi nama oleh ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) serta oleh para pembuatnya. Untuk keperluan desain, tegangan leleh tarik menjadi kuantitas acuan yang digunakan oleh spesifikasi-spesifikasi, seperti AISC, sebagai variabel sifat untuk menentukan kekuatan atau tegangan ijinnya. Terminologi tegangan leleh (yield stress) digunakan baik untuk menyatakan “titik leleh” (yield point), yakni suatu penyimpangan yang jelas dari elastisitas sempurna yang ditunjukkan oleh kebanyakan baja struktur biasa; maupun “kekuatan leleh” (yield stress), yakni tegangan satuan pada suatu titik perpindahan regangan untuk baja-baja yang tidak memiliki titik leleh yang jelas

Debate and Public Speaking Experience

yesterday i joined english community, this community was called LEDS : Public Speaking and Debating Society. This Community is held every Saturday at 4 PM in BIP Library Room floor 3. in LEDS i learned several material in how to make good presentation and Debate Skill. at 4 o'clock yesterday i was doing presentation about "Labour Union Policy". for the first experience i was really little bit nervous. i didn't make any presentation before. when the presentation time was comming i suddenly got my confidence. now i would like to tell you about my presentation material : the tittle of my policy is

"This House would ban prisoners publishing accounts of their crimes". I in turn have a few inquiries concerning overall structure of the debate as well as the context of the resolution as well. First off, I would be glad to specify a few definitions for which we will look to not only in providing jurisdiction on the overall thrust of the debate, but also arguments as well, and hope you will allow them to stand, as following:

1> Ban: To prohibit, forbid, or bar; interdict [2]
2> Prisoner: A person deprived of liberty and kept under involuntary restraint, confinement, or custody [1]
3> Publish: To make publicly or generally known [2]
4> Account: An oral or written description of particular events or situations; narrative [2]
5> Crime: An action or an instance of negligence that is deemed injurious to the public welfare or morals or to the interests of the state and that is legally prohibited [2]

For this debate since I am the first speaker and the Prime minister for this debate I will set the mechanism for this debate. We, as the the British Government, will not allow any prisoner remanded at detained at her Majesties pleasure in British prisons to make contact with any journalist, editor or anyone else seeking to gather information about their crime or any other crime with the intention of publishing it and will hail the act of seeking to gather information from prisoners about their crimes in Britain, unless a court order has been granted, as preventing the course of justice. Any persons helping this crime take place will be seen as accomplices preventing the course of justice and therefore committing a crime as well. This is relevant before, during and after the conviction, during the sentence and after the sentence has been served. Clarification will be provided on request.

I see a problem in society and I believe that proposing this motion will solve it. The problem we see is that people who have been charged with a crime, any crime, who then seeks to publicise their account of the story out side of the British court where they were tried makes money out of a criminal act that caused pain and suffering to persons or their property. I will devote this round to showing why this is harmful to society from two main points.
Point one: suffering caused to victims and/or family of victim is unacceptable
Point two: the glorification of crime

My first point looks into the suffering of the victims of the(se) crime(s) committed by the prisoner publishing their story. Being the victim of a crime punishable by a jail sentence naturally comes with stress and harms that cause grievance to the victim and most are put at ease or gain a little more strength to cope knowing that the offender is serving out a jail sentence and justice is being served. However when a prisoner seeks to publish his/her story the victims are thrown into the spotlight once again and reminders of the crime are constantly around them with journalists and publishers coming to their house or phoning them asking to corroborate information or the like and when the story is published. With these reminders they cannot escape the crime and the memory of the fear is brought back again unnecessarily. Even though the offender is behind bars they still have the power to cause suffering to their victims and I see this as unacceptable. The state has a duty to protect its citizens hence why we punish criminals so why then do we allow them the luxury of being able to cause upset to the citizens we sought to protect. This is a harm to society because when this happens citizens lose faith in the way that we are trying to protect them. They see that it doesn't matter if they are in jail or not because prisoners are still able to cause this emotional harm to the victims when in jail. If people lose faith in the system they are less likely to be co-operative in helping to sentence the more serious offenders due to the belief that they are not protected even if the offender is in jail therefore giving due to the view that it is better to not get involved with the conviction even if the offender is dangerous because they feel unsafe rather than to aggravate the offender and suffer at their hand which they see can happen even if they are in jail. By not only sentencing the criminals but enforcing the core principles of jail, to be removed from society as punishment for a crime committed and to protect society until the offender is no longer deemed a danger, by making sure they are prevented form publishing a story and glorifying their crime we uphold our commitment to our citizens and show we are very serious about the punishments we give for crimes committed on our land. We protect our citizens, maintain the seriousness in which we view crimes and allow the victims of crime privacy and confidentiality to recover from the trauma of the crime.

My second point addresses glorification of the prisoners a crime and the unnecessary publicity that the criminal gets. This person has been sentenced to jail for a serious crime they have been convicted of by a court. They have taken away a persons positive right and have broken their side of the social contract. No one should be allowed to make money out this act. By publishing a story they are allowed to portray their crimes in such a way that can portray themselves to be victims of an unfair system where this has not been the case. Not only does this impact the views of the police and their puts social restrictions on them that can impact how they work in a negative way but it creates a situation where police and the law are less likely to take these claims seriously from other people charged with a crime. If this other person has been unfairly treated or is wrongly convicted the law are less likely to believe them due to so many other criminals making claims of bad treatment or being wrongfully convicted. This means that the right people are less likely to get the right help harming the image of the police and the law even more which this mechanism will go some way to putting an end to as they are now forced to make these claims through their lawyer meaning the claims are directly in the system and are not hampered by media publicity which can give unnecessary weight to unsupported claims. This brings me to my main point; the media. Newspapers and magazines are companies that sell stories and they have been known to twist stories or to add weight to unfounded claims to add more impact and get more readers. This distorts the facts and can blind the public form the truth, sparking unnecessary, angry views that are unfortunately based on unfounded opinion and hardly ever true facts. This publicity allows the prisoner a place under the spot light but not to portray their crime in a factual fashion but a way that gives them ten minutes of fame brought about at the cost of someone's suffering. Crime should not pay. This glorifies being a criminal more than something fictional seen on TV or read in book because it is real. The crime is real, the offender is real, the prison sentence is real and this makes this situation so much more dangerous. If a sort is said to be a true story, even if it is biased to the point that the facts are distorted, people are likely to believe it. This is harmful in this type of situation because of the bias and the effect of publicity in the media that I discussed earlier. The accounts are believed and pressure is put on the law where there shouldn't be and criminals are allowed the ten minutes of fame that they see even though it is causing harm to society and the victims of the crime. By proposing this motion we are saying, "no" to criminals that seek to earn from their conviction and we keep unnecessary pressure off the already pressured police while lessening the effect biased views keeping trials as fair as possible and making it easier for justice to be served where there has been a miscarriage of justice.

We must remember that the suffering of the victim is as real as the crime that the offenders seek to profit from. We must remember that the reopening of wounds from the pressure of being dragged under the scrutiny of the media by those that harmed them in the first place is an unnecessary stress and defeats the purpose of the core values of a prison sentence. It is our duty to protect our citizens and punish those that break their side of the social contract. It is our responsibility to take these crimes seriously and not allow criminals to abuse their right to freedom of speech at the cost of those already made their victims. It is our duty to stop this and for those reasons the motion that "this house would ban prisoners publishing accounts of their crimes" should be proposed.

How to be Able to Speak in English

Judul di atas merupakan salah satu pertanyaan yang paling sering saya dengar. Sebenarnya saya juga mengerti mengapa orang-orang bertanya demikian karena bahasa inggris merupakan bahasa Internasional. saya merasa kemampuan bahasa inggrisnya pun masih harus terus ditingkatkan. In this short writing, I’ll be mainly talking about two things. Pertama, background kemampuan bahwa inggris saya; dan kedua, upaya-upaya yang saya lakukan.

The first one is my background/experience. Just to set the context, sebagaimana yang saya sebutkan pada tulisan sebelumnya, saat saya masuk ITB tahun 2008, kemampuan berbahasa inggris saya sangat lah rendah. Jangankan mengirim email, searching di google saja saya tidak bisa saat itu. Berhubung di ITB mahasiswa didalam kegiatan akademiknya selalu berhubungan dengan materi bacaan dan literatur dalam bahasa inggris. Mungkin ada sebagian orang yang sulit untuk berbicara dalam bahasa inggris, namun masih mengerti apa yang dikatakan lawan bicara, nah saya dulu, bahkan apa yang dikatakan lawan bicara pun tidak menegerti.

Terkait dengan perlukah kita ikut di les bahasa inggris atau tidak, I would say, as long as we have passion to learn it, we don’t need to. Dulu saat di semester dua, saya sempat berpikir bahwa sebaiknya saya mengikuti les bahasa inggris. Sayapun mengecek beberapa tempat kursus bahasa inggris. Ternyata setelah saya survey, pada umumnya biaya kursus bahasa inggris adalah sekitar 800-900ribu per level. Satu level sekitar 2 bulan. Pada saat itu, budget bulanan saya hanya 800 ribu (450ribu nya merupakan makan @15.000 x 30 hari). Saat itu saya menghitung-hitung, jika saya berpuasa nabi daud (sehari puasa sehari tidak), maka saya akan bisa menghemat 10ribu setiap dua hari, karena tidak ada sahur dan makan siang. Setelah saya hitung, bahkan jika saya puasa nabi daud selama 3 bulan berturut-turut pun, saya hanya bisa save money 450rb, sangat kurang jika dibandingkan dangan biaya les satu level bahasa inggris. Berikut adalah beberapa hal yang dulu, bahkan, sampai sekarang masih saya lakukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa inggris saya.

1. Perbanyak latihan listening dan speaking. Sering” dengar radio dalam bahasa inggris atau nonton berita dalam bahasa inggris. dari dulu, bahkan sampai sekarang, saya sering dengar radio australia atau nonton al jazeera di internet. 2. Perbanyak baca buku dalam bahsa inggris (usahakan pakai buku teks berbahsa inggris). Jika ada kosa kata yang tidak diketahui, lihat di kamus, lalu catat dan hapalkan (saya sarankan menggukan kamus oxford).
3. Untuk membantu kelenturan mulut. baca text bahasa inggris keras2 beberapa menit tiap hari.
4. Kalau ada kelas yang dibuka dalam bahasa inggris, sebaiknya ambil kelas itu saja.
5. Latih percakapan dengan teman yang juga aspired to learn English.

Last but the most important thing, perbanyak do’a pada Allah supaya dimudahkan bisa berbahasa asing. Insyaallah bisa. I believe to learn any language we don’t need to enroll in any special course. As long as we have passion and commitment to learn it. We will be able to. Yakinlah, sangat banyak manfaat yang bisa kita dapatkan jika kita mampu berbahasa asing. Good luck, semoga bermanfaat.

Setiap manuasia selayaknyua dan seharusnya terus untuk memperbaiki apa yang ada dalam dirinya. karena pada dasarnya setiap manusia itu tidak akan pernah terlepas dengan adanya masalah dan kesalahan. oleh sebab itu di tahun 2010 ini kita seharusnya lebih berinstrospeksi diri untuk menjadi manusia yang lebih baik lagi di masa yang akan datang untuk menjapai prestasi yang diinginkan
